Uluwatu is a world-famous surf spot in Bali, and even in Indonesia, known for its perfect waves ideal for advanced surfers. Beginners need not apply here.

The reef point at Uluwatu provides consistent and powerful waves perfect for tube riding and carving.

The best waves at Uluwatu can be found during the dry season, from May to September, when the swell comes from the southwest. The waves here can get quite large, so it’s important to have experience and be familiar with the local surfing conditions before you surf here.

In addition to great waves, Uluwatu also offers breathtaking views from the cliff where the surf spot is located. It’s a popular spot for spectators and photographers to enjoy the surfing sessions from above.

Tips for choosing the right surf school?

Look at

  • The size of the classes – personal attention is key. The smaller the group, the better.
  • Check the experience and background of the instructors. Are they certified?
  • And of course, go for a school that both radiates and provides good vibes. Because surfing is just as much about fun as it is about technique. So also check reviews: Read others’ experiences to assess the quality of the lessons and the overall experience.

And as in any Asian country: Bargain. Especially in the low season, you can often negotiate the price, especially if you plan to stay for a longer period.

When to surf in Bali? The surf season.

When should you grab your surfboard and head to this Indonesian island? Let’s talk about the ideal time to surf in Bali.

The dry season, running from April to October, is the best time to score good and consistent waves. During these months, you’ll find constant waves and a pleasant offshore wind at Bali.

Specifically, from May to September, you’ll find, on average, the most ideal conditions, as they are:

  • Wave conditions: Expect waves that generally range from 1 to 2 meters, with the chance of occasionally a bigger swell that provides an extra challenge.
  • Water temperature: With temperatures fluctuating between 24 and 28 °C, the water during the dry season is super pleasant. Wearing a wetsuit is not necessary.
